Top Places in The Highlands
We can all agree The Highlands, in Louisville, is one of the most frequented destinations for Lousivillians no matter what area you live in. Separating downtown Louisville and The East End, the Highlands is made up of boutiques, restaurants, local shops and bars. The area residences include historic homes ranging in style from Victorian and Tudor Revival to Craftsman Architecture.
Two main streets, Baxter Avenue and Bardstown Road, run the length of the area known as the Highlands. One of the most walkable neighborhoods in all of Louisville, on any given day, you will find people roaming these streets to get their fill of the local fare and great shopping to be had. There’s tons to do and places to frequent but we wanted to highlight some of our favorites!
Enjoy a simple night out at the old Baxter Avenue Movie Theatre –with small theatre rooms, you really feel like you’re cozy at home while drinking your local favorite micro-brew from their tailored-to-you bar. Looking for a laugh, The Comedy Caravan is the perfect laugh factory with comedians from all over traveling to perform stand-up on this stage. Tickets are sold in advance and at the door for your convenience. The space is limited so it’s best to plan ahead for this entertainment.
Want to grab a bite after the movie? You’ll find anything your heart desires – from barbeque to sushi, fast food to bar food to white tablecloth dining.
For sushi, we love Dragon King’s Daughter. Try out La Chasse’s European menu or visit The Fat Lamb for some upscale comfort food. In the mood for Latin? Seviche hits the spot for that, Havana Rumba for Cuban and El Taco Luchador is our choice for Mexican cuisine in the Highlands. Ramsi’s Cafe On the World is another favorite that you’re sure to find something on the menu for everyone. But if you’re going for a more streamlined choice of a good ol’ burger and fries, we suggest hitting up HopCat and enjoying the view from their upstairs patio.
Something a lot of Louisvillians don’t know is that Louisville has it’s own style of pizza! And of course, you can find Louisville-style pizza right here in The Highlands at Wick’s Pizza and Impellizzeri’s.
Looking for the best spots to grab a beloved mico-brew? Here are some of our suggested stops - Gravely Brewing Co, HopCat, Mile Wide Beer Co, Holy Grale and Gralehaus – and if you get a bit too tipsy after hitting them all up, you can always check-in for the night at Gralehaus’s B&B.
Want to get outdoors for a nice day? Enjoy the Bardstown Road Farmers Market or Douglass Loop Farmers Market or head to Cavehill Cemetery to walk the stunning grounds. It may sound crazy, but Cavehill has guided tours where thousands of people sign-up every year to delve into the history of this amazing property. Filled with history, some of Louisville’s greats are laid to rest here – Muhammed Ali, Pappy Van Winkle and Colonel Harland Sanders, to name a few. Nearby, Cherokee Park is a 2.5 mile scenic loop of beauty for hikers, bikers, dog-walkers and runners alike and home to some great wildlife in the area.
If that isn’t enough, several events take place here throughout the year. Louisville Zombie Walk and Bardstown Road Aglow are two of the most well-known. Every year, more than 40,000 zombies take over part of Bardstown Road. The 3/4 of a mile walk between Eastern Parkway and MidCity Mall ends with a block party near Highland Ave. And it wouldn’t be a party in the Highlands without music - live bands, entertainment, food vendors, costume contest and the Zombie Market makeup this wild event.
Whether you choose to live here or just make it a destination, The Highlands will hold a special place in your heart.
